It's the first hydraulic component triggered when you press the clutch pedal in a manual transmission car. If it leaks, the pedal will become very soft, you won't be able to press it all the way down, or you'll feel the clutch not disengaging completely when shifting gears; in severe cases, you might press the pedal into the void, and the car won't move. Its principle is very similar to the brake master cylinder, except one controls the brakes and the other controls the clutch.
